Freddie Roach talks about Amir Khan’s future – Boxing News
Following Khan’s humiliating defeat to Danny Garcia, Freddie Roach believes Khan needs to stop making blunders in the ring. Roach has been training Khan for more than 3 years now, and the Hall of Famer trainer believes Khan’s excitement gets in his way and
he makes mistakes.
“We discussed how his hands need to be up more, and how he has to work on his defense a lot more, and not standing up straight as he pulls away from punches. Pulling straight back. He's got to stop dropping his right hand, and so, we've got to work on his
defense a little bit,” said Roach regarding Khan’s defence.
Khan completely dropped his guard while thrashing Garcia. The unbeaten American who is known for his iron fists capitalised on the opportunity and struck Khan with his right hand lightning bolt in the third round. The hook was devastating, making Khan stagger
in the ring from then on.
Khan was lucky to enter the fourth round but he could not do much. He was twice knocked out in the fourth round by the WBC light welterweight titlist and the referee decided to stop the show.
“We had a very good discussion about this. The thing is, with the caliber of fights that he's had, Amir needs to stop making mistakes. He's got to stop rushing in there and fighting with emotion. He's got to be more professional about it. We talked about
that, and everyone was on the same page when I left Amir yesterday,” Roach added regarding Khan’s fighting style.
It should be noted here that Khan was initially in control. He won the first two rounds smoothly, without giving Garcia the chance to strike him. However, in the third round, Khan’s over-confidence brought him down.
Later on, in an interview, Khan admitted that he made the blunder of dropping his guard, which gave Garcia the opportunity to strike him on the neck. Khan is now looking for a rematch to reclaim his WBA light welterweight title. However, Garcia’s camp has
already declined the offer of a rematch, saying Khan is no longer competitive enough to face Garcia.
