Freddie Roach wants Amir Khan vs. Floyd Mayweather by December – Boxing News
After his match cancelation against Lamont Peterson, Amir Khan announced he will fight in June or July next. However, nothing has been confirmed by Golden Boy Promotions yet and even Khan said out loud that he needs to reschedule stuff. While Khan seems
to be in the depression mode right now, his trainer Freddie Roach is on the hang. Roach still believes in Khan and he thinks Khan has all the capabilities to fight anyone, even Floyd Mayweather.
In his recent interview, Freddie Roach said that Amir Khan’s next opponent is not confirmed, however there are chances that it could be Danny Garcia. Roach believes Garcia is not capable of facing Khan. According to him, “If it’s [Danny] Garcia (next), Amir
will be too fast and hard-punching for him. Whoever it is, we’ll do this one more fight and then go up to welterweight to look for Floyd Mayweather. I see Floyd’s legs beginning to go and him slowing up a little. If we can get him as early as December, Amir
can beat him.”
On the other hand, when Khan was asked about his views regarding Lamont Peterson’s positive drug test, he said, “Now I realise the danger I was in at the original fight. Peterson could have seriously damaged me. He could also have destroyed his own life.”
Khan further said that Peterson was able to take more punishment than he could just because he was juiced up. Khan also said that he does not think Peterson can ever recover from the eye injury he had suffered in their last encounter.
Yesterday, Khan said he needs to schedule a meeting with Golden Boy Promotions in order to discuss his next opponent. Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, said earlier this week that Khan will be fighting in June, July or even by May end, but
nothing is for sure yet.
After Lamont son’s positive test news broke out, things have changed for Khan. Khan has demanded the IBF to call their last encounter a ‘No Contest’ and to return his titles, which is something IBF is considering.
