Freddie Roach wants Mayweather vs. Pacquiao to happen before he retires – Boxing News
News of Freddie Roach’s retirement from coaching was in the air just when his confirmation came in. The American boxing trainer has revealed that he will retire once gets Manny Pacquiao a shot on Floyd Mayweather.
Freddie Coach has been coaching Manny Pacquiao throughout his whole career. He suffers from Parkinson’s disease, which is the mere reason as to why he wants to retire as soon as possible. However, since he knows the importance of getting Pacquiao a fight
against Floyd Mayweather Jr., the Hall of Famer trainer wants to get the job done before leaving the industry.
In his recent interview, Roach revealed, “The reason I stay around is because I want this fight and to get him ready for Mayweather. I feel it’s going to happen and it looks like it can happen. We will do everything in our power to make this fight happen,
even give more of the money if he wants. If that’s what it takes to get him into the ring.”
Manny Pacquiao is the first eight-division world champion and the current WBO welterweight champion, whereas Floyd Mayweather Jr. is the current WBC welterweight champion. Both the fighters are highly popular in their respective countries, Mayweather in
the USA whereas Pacquiao in the Philippines.
In the recent weeks, we have read and heard stories from both the fighters, trying to explain why the most awaited fight of the year did not happen. Manny Pacquiao, in his last interview, clearly stated that he felt embarrassed when Mayweather offered him
a flat $40 million while he wanted to keep the entire pay-per-view proceeds. Similarly, Mayweather has revealed that he could never come to the right terms with Pacquiao, which is why the fight never happened. According to Mayweather, Manny is not ‘the sharpest
knife in the drawer’ and so he is not ready to make any negotiations.
Not only the fighters, even their promoters had jump in the pool to set things right. Bob Arum, Manny’s promoter, tried convincing Mayweather for a flat $50 million while Manny would keep the pay-per-view proceeds, however Mayweather rejected the offer.
