Freddie Roach warns Danny Garcia against early knockout – Boxing News
Hall of Famer trainer Freddie Roach has warned WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia against early knockout. According to Roach, Garcia starts slow in the ring, which is an opportunity for Khan to capitalise on.
“(Garcia) He says he has speed but we’ve got way more speed than that,” said Roach who is confident his fighter Amir Khan will defeat the unbeaten American.
“Take that advantage away completely. Danny Garcia’s a tough guy, a slow starter; he better watch out, he might get knocked out early,” he added.
Roach was asked if Angel Garcia, father and trainer of Danny Garcia, has hurt Khan in anyway by shooting racist comment, to which the respect trainer answered, “I think he’s pretty funny, it doesn’t bother me at all.”
“I know exactly what he’s up to. I had a long talk with Amir and I told him ‘Hey, he just wants us to fight the wrong fight’. I said ‘Don’t let happen. We’ll be fine’,” Roach added while talking about Angel Garcia.
During the interview, Roach also spoke of athletes taking drugs in the sport, especially referring to Lamont Peterson.
He iterated, “These guys signed up to do these drug tests and so forth; it’s crazy to me that they are getting caught.”
He added that he believes athletes should be more aware of what others are giving them and what they are putting in their bodies. Roach wants there to be more communication between strength coaches and trainers for the betterment of athletes.
For now, Roach believes British-Pakistani fighter Amir Khan is more than ready to take on Garcia. The fight between the both will be held on July 14, at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. Garcia will be defending his WBC light welterweight title,
along with the vacant WBA light welterweight title being on the line.
Since it is a title unification bout, the winner will be the one to get the honour. It should be noted here that this is Garcia’s first ever title defence, after taking the title from the legendary Mexican fighter Erik Morales.
