Freddie Roach worried for Manny Pacquiao regarding fight against Juan Manuel Marquez – Boxing News
Hall of Famer promoter Freddie Roach was never in favour of his fighter Manny Pacquiao opting for a fourth match against Mexican fighter Juan Manuel Marquez. However, Pacquiao felt it was time to show the world that he rules Marquez and so he went on.
According to Roach, he tries to train Pacquiao hard for the fight but the Filipino always goes back to his style, where he makes mistakes and gives Marquez the chance to score points.
“I've had three chances to come up with the strategy and the style to beat this guy and we haven't done well in any of them and the last one was the worst,” said Roach.
“Marquez put the muscle on and he kind of landed the power shots in that fight. And a lot of people thought we lost that fight.”
“But I need to get Manny to get that killer instinct back. To be pound-for-pound the best fighter in the world, I think we need to knock this guy out. I don't think we'll win a decision regardless of how the fight goes.”
To a certain extent Roach is right, Marquez has been the toughest opponent for Pacquiao to date. The duo has locked horns thrice. The first fight ended up in a tie while the second and third were won by Pacquiao. However, all three fights were close enough
and while Pacquiao was the dominator, Marquez scored enough clean shots to appease his fans.
In his previous interviews, Roach has asserted that Marquez is the only fighter who knows how to counter Pacquiao’s speed and skills. The duo fought last year in November, when Pacquiao won via split decision but the crowd booed at the Pac-man, believing
Marquez had won the show. It was an awful moment for the then WBO welterweight titlist who is usually the crowd’s favourite.
As of now, Pacquiao wants to knock Marquez out in order to prove his mettle. Even though Pacquiao has already reached the heights of success, he believes he still needs to beat Marquez more dominantly in order to cement his legacy.
