After a leave of four years from Major League Soccer, Freddy Adu is now in the same league where he started his professional football career at the age of 14. The US international officially joined http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Philadelphia-Union-c40231 on Friday at a press conference.
Before he left for Portuguese club http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Portugal-c2984 and was shipped out to four different clubs across Europe: AS Monaco, Belenenses, Aris FC and Caykur Rizespor.
Upon his return, the player admitted that he has changed after enduring the hardships outside the US.
“I think I’m a better player today than when I left MLS four years ago,” said Adu, who signed with the Philadelphia Union on Friday, marking his return to the league where his career began as a 14-year-old prodigy in 2004. “When you’re a teenager, it’s a
little bit different. As the years go on, you get better and mature and start to put things together.”
The player further thanked several people who played a key role in his professional training. Among others were MLS commissioner Don Garber, former US national team coach Bob Bradley and his agent Richard Motzkin, whom he thanked for the new contract.
However, the most praised was the man sitting right next to him at the press conference, Union head coach Peter Nowak. The player appreciated the way Nowak has taken Union to the dizzy heights in the league in just their second year.
This is not the first time Adu will be working under Nowak’s supervision. Nowak was DCU’s head coach when Adu started his career with the MLS outfit. According to many sources, the main reason for leaving the club in 2006 was a conflict between the stern
coach and the temperamental footballer.
However, Adu did not register any complaints, nor did the head coach. Rather the player praised Nowak’s ability to keep tabs on his players. “He’s always been a father figure,” he said. “He was always trying to steer me in the right direction. Sometimes
you get into arguments with your dad, too, right? … Peter will never let you slack. I love that.”
