Freddy Emir wins final time trial stage as Felix Rafael takes overall lead in 2011 Vuelta a Colombia
Boyaca Orgullo De America Loteria De Boyaca team’s Freddy Emir Montana won the thirteen and final stage of 2011 Vuelta a Colombia on Sunday, June 26. Felix Rafael Cardenas took the overall leader’s yellow jersey.
The race started in Medellin and ended in Santa Elena. The 28-year-old Freddy took a total of 41 minutes and 42 seconds to cover the distance of 18 kilometres.
Giovanni Manuel Baez of Epm-Une was the runner-up with 16 seconds behind Freddy. Victor Nino of Empresa De Energia Boyaca Ebsa finished third with a difference of 20 seconds.
Previously, Freddy won the overall classification and third stage of Vuelta a Boyaca and also won the fourth stage of Vuelta a Leon in 2009.
A group of six riders made their first breakaway, which included, Sergio Luis Henao, Walter Pedraza (EPM-UNE), Felix Rafael Cardenas (GW Shimano), Giovanni Manuel Baez (EPM-UNE), Oscar Sevilla (Gobernacion De Antioquia-Indeportes Antioquia) and Freddy Emir
Montana.
Oscar Sevilla of Gobernacion De Antioquia-Indeportes Antioquia tried his best to take lead, but he failed and grabbed the ninth spot with a difference of 1 minute and 34 seconds.
Walter Pedraza of Epm-Une won the King of Mountain (KOM) of the day with 58 points ahead of Luis Fernando Camargo of Boyaca Orgullo De America Loteria De Boyaca and Freddy Emir.
Jefferson Vargas of the Redetrans-Supergiros-Indervalle-Emcali team won the title of best overall sprint classification with 50 points. Jorge Humberto Martinez was in the second spot with 29 points and Remberto Jaramillo finished third with 27 points.
Felix Rafael Cardenas took the overall lead with a timing of 49 hours, 36 minutes and 49 seconds. Giovanni Manuel Baez of Epm-Une was in good form, but was unable to take the lead and grabbed second spot with 2 seconds down to Colombian.
The stage winner, Freddy Emir Montana, was in third spot with a difference of 36 seconds ahead of Sergio Luis.
