Freddy Garcia fails in vital outing, as New York Yankees lose 3-5 to Detroit Tigers – MLB Playoffs
In a crucial second outing of the five-game American League Division Series, the New York Yankees’ starter Freddy Garcia failed to impress the spectators, his team-mates and manager Joe Girardi.
Right-hand starter was employed to start the second outing of the series, at Yankee Stadium on Sunday night, against the Detroit Tigers. The 35-year-old veteran hurler opened the outing with a ball and then sent Austin Jackson back to camp, striking him
out. It was a great start for the Yankees, but Garcia immediately allowed a single and then a homer to Miguel Cabrera to create trouble for his batters.
A hit by the strong bat of Miguel Cabrera cleaned when Garcia got a no-hitter second inning and then carried his form until the top of the sixth inning. From the second to the fifth, Garcia allowed only a single hit and struck-out three batters to create
some ease for the batters.
However, in the sixth, another disruption happened in Garcia’s pitching technique and poor fielding cost the Yankees an early single. Austin Jackson hit to short-stop Derek Jeter, who made a false throw allowing him to steal first base. An occupied base
destabilised Garcia, who permitted another single to Magglio Ordonez and before getting Delmon Young out.
There was a chance for Garcia to regain his impetus, but he again started off with a ball and then an RBI single to Cabrera. It completely staggered him out of balance as he allowed another RBI single to Victor Martinez before handing the ball over to Boone
Logan.
Garcia worked 77 pitches to complete just over five innings, in which he allowed six hits and four runs. His spell was also loaded with six strike-outs but these did not work anything positive for the Yankees’ batting, which was struggling against Max Scherzer.
The batting camp was the Yankees’ last hope but manager Girardi was amazed to see the way his perfect combination was being ruined by Scherzer. An unexpected failure by Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, Robinson Cano and Mark Teixeira was the real trouble for
Girardi. Being a veteran manager, he did not show any sign of a problem but instead expressed a solid determination.
The ALDS will now be more interesting with both teams in a balanced situation. Both teams will be looking to game three to take a decisive lead in this exciting series.
