Freddy Garcia helps New York Yankees humble Seattle Mariners 6-2 - MLB Update
Freddy Garcia used his fastballs and sliders extremely effectively as New York Yankees humbled the Seattle Mariners 6-2 at Yankee Stadium in New York on Sunday, August 5 in the finale of their three match series.
Yankees’ starting pitcher Garcia looked in a very confident mood on Sunday as he dominated Seattle’ hitting line-up to set up an easy win for his team. Overall, he gave up just five hits and two runs in five solid innings to grab his fifth win of the season.
"He's had to reinvent himself," Ibanez said of Garcia. "It's really his will and determination that's made him great."
Relief pitcher also made quick work of Mariners’ hitters, tossing up two scoreless innings and Rafael Soriano pitched the perfect ninth to lower his ERA to 1.88.
Mark Teixeira reached on infield single to second in the first and Derek Jeter scored to put New York on the board. Curtis Granderson continued his excellent hitting streak, reaching first safely on an error by Mariners’ first baseman Dustin Ackley. Jeter
earned an RBI single to centre in the fourth as the Yankees secured a decent 3-1 lead.
"For me, it's another win," Garcia said. "Hopefully, more are coming."
"We kind of labored through that game there," Mariners’ manager Eric Wedge said. "We still need to get better with our pitch selection."
Designated hitter Raul Ibanez also had a great outing as he drove in crucial runs to help his team end the game on a high note. Ibanez homered in the fifth and stole a single in the sixth to extend the lead to 6-2.
With their win, the Yankees improved their record to 63-44 and they are now six games ahead of second placed Baltimore Orioles on the AL East standings chart. Manager Joe Girardi will be expecting his team to continue the domination to win their 28th World
Series title.
Mariners, on the other hand, will be looking to bounce back from an embarrassing defeat. They are at the bottom of the AL West Division standings and it will be interesting to see if they can use their pitching resources more effectively to make it through
to the playoffs.
