Freddy Garcia shines as New York Yankees defeat Baltimore Orioles 4-2 – MLB Update
Freddy Garcia put in a tremendous performance as the New York Yankees beat Baltimore Orioles 4-2 in the four-game series finale at Yankee Stadium in New York on Sunday, July 31.
Garcia made six strikeouts over six dazzling innings and scattered only two runs on five hits to help the Yankees through their 64th win of the season. His stunning performance also took the Yankees to 22 games with more than .500 averages, their
highest in the 2011 regular season.
Brett Gardner blistered a heavy hit for three runs to help Garcia in the fourth inning. Curtis Granderson joined hands to score the fourth run in the game generating fourth inning.
Garcia allowed two runs, one to Adam Jones in the third and second to Vladimir Guerrero in the sixth inning. However, Garcia showed he is an unbeatable pitcher under the sun. He now has 5-1 with1.73 ERA in eight starts in the day games. Garcia had no explanation
for this stint but his companion was aware of the secret.
Mariano Rivera, who pitched a stunning ninth to grab his 27th save of the season, joked. "I just told him that he has to pitch every day game.”
He further added. “He does good. He is the veteran and knows how to pitch. He does not have the 95-mph fastball he used to have, but he has a lot of wisdom. And with that, he uses it to his advantage.”
Hector Noesi and David Robertson also remained scoreless in their combined two innings.
Orioles’ manager Buck Showalter was not impressed at all of the way his starter Jake Arrieta tossed his game. Arrieta allowed six walks, four runs and five hits over five innings.
"Six walks, hit by pitch, and the runs he gave up weren't usually enough to get you beat," Showalter said.
Jim Johnson and Kevin Gregg however did not allow any run over their combined three innings but it was not enough to take the Orioles back in the game.
Yankees snatched the series 3-1, as they have lost the first game of the series due to strong pitching of the Orioles’ starter Jeremy Guthrie. He allowed only one run over seven innings in this game. However, the Yankees now are among the leaders of the
2011 regular season and will take on Chicago White Sox on Monday, August 1.
The Orioles will visit Kansas City Royals to take them on the first of the three game series on Monday. It will be interesting to see how the Yankees carry their winning momentum forward into their next series.
