Freddy Garcia shines as New York Yankees defeat Tampa Bay Rays 4-0 – MLB Update
Freddy Garcia had torn apart the Tampa Bay Rays’ batting line-up to help the New York Yankees snatch a 4-0 shut-out triumph in the third game of the four-game series at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg on Wednesday, July 20.
The 35-year-old right-hand pitcher struck-out seven batters in his no-score six innings to snatch his eighth win of the series. He allowed 66 strikes of 92 pitches and allowed only eight hits to grab his win after two consecutive losses. Taking this win,
he improved his record to 8-7 with 3.21 ERA in 17 starts.
Boone Logan tossed scoreless seven pitches, David Robertson threw shut-out inning and Mariano Rivera struck-out two batters to cement the Yankees’ 57th win of the season in front of a large crowd.
Curtis Granderson sent the ball flying into the stands with his powerful strike off the Rays’ David Price in the top of the first inning. His two-run homer set the foundation for the Yankees to take their revenge of the last night’s 3-2 defeat.
"Initially when it was hit, I thought right away I might have had a shot," Granderson said. "I didn't know how hard it was hit, how far it was hit. The main thing was continue to get back there and see what happens. I saw that one all the way."
After allowing a home-run, Price made a come-back and remained with six hits and five strike-outs in just over seven innings. He struck Granderson on the back on the last pitch of the inning.
"Ouch," Yankees’ manager Joe Girardi said. "It started off great with the two-run homer and then he hit a ball off his calf, and then he got drilled in the back. ... He is a little beat-up."
Eduardo Nunez scored an RBI double in the top of the ninth to finalise 4-0 shut-out win over the rivals. The Rays’ reliever Dane De La Rosa allowed these two runs and two walks over his single inning. Closer Cesar Ramos did not permit any run on less than
an inning pitched.
