Putting aside their woeful Ligue 1 form, Stade Rennais did enough to win against Nancy in Coupe de la Ligue to book a place in the next round
Les Rouges et Noirs haven’t started the 2012/2013 Ligue 1 campaign well and are currently 18th in the league, with only 4 points after 6 games.
However, Rennes didn’t allow their poor league form haunt them in Coupe de la Ligue, as they cruised to a hard-fought 3-2 win over http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/AS-Nancy-c38468 Lorraine on Tuesday.
And coach, Frederic Antonetti is pleased with the way his side played on Tuesday, especially after the weekend game against Toulouse, where they were denied a win when Les Pitchouns’ goalkeeper scored in the 95th minute of the game.
While talking to reporters, the 51-year-old stated that the club is going through tough times and the victory is great for players’ morale. Rennes played with several new players against Nancy, and the coach is happy to see the youngsters stepping up to
the occasion.
"I tried something out tonight [making a number of changes to his line-up, using young players] and we qualified, which is great for us given the tough times we're going through.”
Antonetti added that scoring three goals against a quality team is really pleasing, but lamented the goals his side conceded. The coach said that Rennes could have scored few more goals but they wasted several golden opportunities.
“We scored three goals but it was a shame to concede two and to have been shaky at the end. But we had chances and scored good goals.
The former Nice coach believes that his side deserved to win considering the fact that players played on the weekend. However, Stade Rennais let their guard down in the later stages of the match, and Antonetti has warned his players not to lose their focus
in the up-coming games.
“We deserved the win even though the end got a bit hairy because the Toulouse game [and TFC 'keeper Ali Ahamada's last-minute equaliser] was still in our heads. We still doubt ourselves."
