Frederick Bousquet seizes Men’s 50m freestyle gold: Day seven – European LC Championships
Frederick Bousquet of France seized gold medal of the Men’s 50m freestyle on day seven of the European Long Course Championships in Debrecen, Hungary on Sunday, May 27.
Bousquet, who qualified into the playoff as fastest swimmer, lived up to the expectations of his supporters by snaring gold medal of the event.
With his impeccable pace and gruelling strategy, Bousquet remained one and a half stroke ahead of his strongest competitor and reached the finishing wall for gold medal with a wonderful timing of 21.80 seconds.
The gold medallist remained nearly one second slower from his own European mark of 20.94 seconds made by him during 2009. His dazzling performance also remained 0.89 seconds slower from the world mark of 20.91 seconds, owned by Cesar Augusto Cielo Filho in 2009.
He was followed by Stefan Nystrand of Sweden, who stayed just 0.24 seconds apart and clocked a superb effort of 22.04 seconds for silver medal.
Nystrand was chased by Andriy Govorov of Ukraine, who was only 0.14 seconds slower from overpowering his foregoing finisher and settled on the finishing wall for bronze medal with a nice time of 22.18 seconds.
The bronze medallist was followed by Ari-Pekka Liukkonen of Finland, Marco Orsi of Italy and Kristian Gkolomeev of Greece, who tried hard to escape each other over the finishing end but ended in a joint finish for fourth position of the discipline.
The trio remained just 0.04 seconds slower from their foregoing finisher and finished their swim in a time of 22.22 seconds.
Subsequently, the crowd experienced sluggish effort of French veteran Alain Bernard, who stayed 0.02 seconds apart and emerged on the victory stand for seventh position with an effort of 22.24 seconds.
Similarly, Bernard was followed by Norbert Trandafir of Romania, who stayed half body length behind and gained eighth position of the discipline with the timing of 22.65 seconds.
In addition, the crowd appreciated commendable efforts of all contestants in the single lap freestyle event while the position holders were invited on the medal rostrum for medals and accolades at the prize distribution ceremony of the tournament.
