Frederico Gil, Tobias Kamke move to the second qualifier – BNP Paribas Open 2012
Frederico Gil defeats Alex Kuznetsov 6-1, 6-1
Top seed, Frederico Gil of Portugal, scored an easy victory over world number 193 Alex Kuznetsov in the first round of the qualifying draw at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, USA on Tuesday. Ranked 86th in the world,
Gil crushed the American 6-1, 6-1 in just 56 minutes.
Gil showed from his game that he is the best player in the qualifying draw and dominated the match from very first point. The Portuguese dropped only one game in the first set and clinched it 6-1.
The 26-year-old hit one ace and a double fault in the opener. The Portuguese evaded all the three break risks he came across and made the most of two of the four opportunities he got.
The proceedings in the second set were not much different from the previous one, as Kuznetsov succeeded in winning just a single game and lost the set 1-6.
Gil made the life of his opponent with his fiery serve replies and won a total of 16 of the 27 return points in the second set.
The Portuguese will play Belgian Ruben Bemelmans in the second round. Bemelmans ousted Pierre-Ludovic Duclos of Canada in three sets 7-6(5), 5-7, 6-3 in the first match.
Tobias Kamke beats Greg Jones 4-6, 6-2, 6-4
Second seed Tobias Kamke survived the surprise in the first set to overcome Greg Jones of Australia 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 to get through to the second round.
World number 198 Jones shocked his much higher ranked opponent in the opening set. The Australian needed a single breakthrough to capture it 6-4.
Jones was backed by his strong serves in the opener, firing three aces and converting 14 of the 16 first deliveries into points.
Kamke, who paid the price for taking the Australian lightly, raised the level of his play. The German allowed Jones to win only two games in the second set, sealing it 6-2.
The Hamburg, Germany resident was almost perfect on the first serves, as he won an incredible 15 of the 16 points on them. However, he was rusty on the second ones, committing four double faults.
Kamke and Jones shared three breaks of serve in the final set. Though, it was Kamke who grabbed two of them to claim it 6-4. The match lasted for two hours and nine minutes.
The German will meet Amer Delic of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the next match. Delic upset 19th seed Julio Silva in the first round.
