Frederico Gil undoes Flavio Cipolla in easy straights at Monte Carlo Masters
World Number 83 Frederico Gil sent Flavio Cipolla of France off the clay courts of Monte Carlo in straight sets in the second round of qualifying singles at the 2011 Monte Carlo Masters, scoring a 6-1, 6-3 win over his opponent. The Portuguese player took barely one hour and eighteen minutes to oust his opponent, and will now make an appearance in the main draw of the prestigious tournament.
Gil is 26 years old, and has been part of the ATP since 2003. He has spent almost eight years on tour, although a title is so far not within his reach. He defeated Argentine’s Federico Del Bonis 6-2, 6-0 in the first round to score an easy victory over the World Number 158. Gil took just two minutes more than one hour and two minutes to secure his position in the second round of the qualifying singles.
Flavio Cipolla is 27 years old, and has been ranked World Number 159 by the ATP. He has only won a single match so far this year, and does not seem likely to win any career titles any time soon. He upset Philipp Petzschner of Germany in the first round of the qualifying singles of this event. This was a surprise win for the player, who was ranked much lower than the second-seeded Petzschner whom he defeated in straight sets 7-6(4), 6-1.
Gil scored a total of two aces during the match, and played a near flawless game by avoiding any double faults. He also defended himself against a single break point, while converting four of eight opportunities against his Italian opponent. The match consisted of a total of eight service and return games apiece. Cipolla seemed to have exhausted his potential by this point, and did not make much of an effort to win the match. The player concluded the match 6-1, 6-3 by taking 61 per cent of the total points to secure a main draw position for himself.
Frederico Gil will be making a showing at the first round of the 2011 Monte Carlo Masters.
