Frederico Gil upsets Marcel Granollers in the second round – Australian Open 2012
Portuguese ace, Frederico Gil, surprised everyone after stunning the 26th seed, Marcel Granollers, in a four set thriller at the Australian Open 2012. He clobbered a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory over the 25-year-old Spaniard to secure a third round
spot at this major hard court tournament taking place in Melbourne, Australia.
World number 107, Gil, displayed exceptional skills and abilities to stun the seed, ranked 28th in the South African Airways ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Rankings, in their eighth clash with each other. He not only avenged his
loss at the Wimbledon Championships last year but also inched closer to pocket $2.3 million prize money.
Reaching his career best rank at number 62 in April 2011, Gil stepped on court number seven with the same intensity and drew the first blood in the opening game. He maintained his form and capitalised on another break chance in the third game, subsequently
taking a 3-0 lead. Despite losing his serve in the following game, he held remaining serves and broke the Spaniard’s serve again in the last game to bag the opener with a 6-3 win.
Higher ranked, Granollers, proved his class in the second set as he smoothly held his opening serve and tied the scores at 1-1. He kept his rhythm throughout the set and broke the Portuguese’s serve in the seventh game to clinch the equaliser with a 6-4
score line.
Gil carried his losing ways in the third set as he gets broken in the opening game. However, he snatched his break back in the very next game and held remaining serves through angled shots and amazing agility from his arsenal of skills. The Portuguese then
cashed in another break chance in the last game and sealed the set by winning six games to four.
The 26-year-old Portuguese kept momentum flowing into the last set and after earning the coveted break in the fourth game, he pulled out the victory with a 6-3 score line.
Sixth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is awaiting the Portuguese in the third round. The French number one stomped over Brazilian Ricardo Mello in straight sets to set-up this meeting.
