Frederico Gil upsets Sergiy Stakhovsky in straight sets at the first round of the Monte Carlo Masters
Monte Carlo qualifier Frederico Gil caused an uproar at the first round of the 2011 ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Monte Carlo, scoring a completely unexpected victory over his opponent Sergiy Stakhovsky in straight sets. The Portuguese
pro took a little less than an hour and ten minutes to send Stakhovsky home with a 6-1, 6-3 loss.
Frederico Gil is ranked much lower than Stakhovsky at World Number 82, and was definitely not expected to win the match. He is 26 years old, and has been part of the Association of Tennis Professionals since 2003. Over the past
eight years, Gil has been unable to produce any ATP career titles. The right-handed pro has won five of thirteen matches so far this year, with this being his sixth victory.
Sergiy Stakhovsky, on the other hand, is currently the second-highest ranked Ukrainian tennis player on the Association of Tennis Professionals. Currently at World Number 38, the pro has been playing tennis in a professional capacity
since 2003 and has spent over seven years on tour. He has won a total of four ATP Career titles so far, and is 25 years old. He is ranked behind Alexandr Dolgopolov on Ukraine’s tennis rankings.
Despite the fact that Stakhovsky is the more successful player, Gil seemed to play with no holds barred in his opening match at the main draw of the Monte Carlo Masters. The player scored one ace against Stakhovsky, and played
a near flawless game with just one double fault. The Ukrainian player, on the other hand, could not keep up with Gil and made countless unforced errors, which resulted in him being broken five times out of then. Stakhovsky himself could only manage one out
of four break point opportunities, and Frederico Gil ultimately took the match with 61 per cent of the total points.
Gil will face Florian Mayer of Germany in the second round at Monte Carlo, after Mayer defeated tenth seed Mikhail Youzhny in his first round encounter at the Masters event.
