Frederike Johanna Heemskerk clinches Women’s 200m backstroke gold – Jose Finkel Trophy
Frederike Johanna Heemskerk of FIAT/MINAS clinched gold medal of the Women’s 200m backstroke on day one of the 2012 Jose Finkel Trophy in Sao Paulo, Brazil on Monday, August 20.
Heemskerk met expectations of her supporters by dominating the playoff of the distant backstroke discipline. With her relentless efforts, she gained a comfortable lead over her opponents throughout the discipline and tapped the finishing wall for first position.
She continued her nerve-wrecking pace throughout the 200m discipline and proved her mettle for gold medal of the discipline by producing a time of 2 minutes and 04.72 seconds.
The champion was chased by Joanna Maranhao of CRF/RJ, who stayed nearly four seconds apart and secured silver medal of the discipline by producing a time of 2 minutes and 08.34 seconds.
Third position of the race was secured by Ana Carolina Alves de Azambuja of CORINTHIANS/ABDEM, who stayed 3.08 seconds slower from her former finisher and stepped on the medal rostrum with a timing of 2 minutes and 11.42 seconds.
Subsequently, Azambuja was traced by Fabiola Pulga Molina of FIAT/MINAS, who stayed only 0.16 seconds slower from securing the podium for bronze medal and settled on the wall as fourth fastest swimmer with a timing of 2 minutes and 11.58 seconds.
Molina was trailed by Azambuja’s teammate, Natalia de Luccas, who remained one and a half body length behind and secured fifth position of the race by posting a time of 2 minutes and 13.20 seconds.
Sixth position of the discipline was obtained by Fernanda Nunes Alvarenga of CRF/RJ, who remained 0.14 seconds slower and posted a time of 2 minutes and 14.34 seconds.
Alvarenga was followed by Jessica Veronez of CORINTHIANS/ABDEM, who secured seventh position of the event by reporting a time of 2 minutes and 15.74 seconds.
Veronez was traced by her teammate, Julyana Kury Matheus, who remained two body lengths slower from her former finisher and hit the wall with an effort of 2 minutes and 17.68 seconds.
Heemskerk was very happy with her gold winning form in the backstroke event and claimed that she would try to continue the same in future events.
