Fredrick Patacchia and Alejo Muniz advance to Round 4 of Quiksilver Pro New York – 2011 ASP World Tour
The latest stop of 2011 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour, Quiksilver Pro New York, continued to treat the fans to exciting contests between the top surfers from all around the world during the seventh and eighth heat of Round 3 on Thursday,
September 8, at Long Beach, New York.
The seventh heat saw Hawaii’s Fredrick Patacchia create an upset by prevailing over Australia’s Mick Fanning, though just barely, to secure his place in Round 4 while bringing the event-title pursuit to a premature end for his rival.
Brazil’s Alejo Muniz walked away with a convincing victory over Australia’s Kieren Perrow in the eighth heat to move into the fourth round, removing his opponent from the competition in the process.
As the seventh heat kicked off, the 29-year-old Patacchia got off to a decent start, locking the first wave that came his way to open his account with a 6.67-point wave. He soon locked another wave to pull off a series of exquisite tricks, earning 7.47 points
for the effort, which moved him to a total of 14.14 points. Struggling to find another good wave, he had to eventually settle for this score.
The former two-time ASP World Champion, Fanning, selected poor waves in the initial stages of the 30-minute heat, but eventually got himself a real juicy one in the later stage to add 7.50 points to his account. In the dying minutes of the heat, he collected
6.57 points off it to take his heat-total to 14.07, finishing merely 0.07 points short of his Hawaiian rival’s score. As a result, Patacchia got to walk away with the win, while Fanning found his name added to the elimination list.
The eighth heat pitted Muniz against Perrow in a battle for survival. As the head-to-head battle kicked off, the 21-year-old Muniz got down to business right away, locking a wave to add 6.60 points to his account. Perrow went through a series of wave before
responding with a 4.33 point wave.
Muniz caught a wave in the later stages of the 30-minute battle to pull off a string of impressive manoeuvres, earning 7.77 points for the effort and moving to a heat-total of 14.37 points. Perrow continued to struggle to find a good score as the heat progressed
and only added an additional 4.00 points to his account, finishing with a heat-total of 8.33 points.
The disappointing performance by Perrow allowed Muniz to walk away with a comfortable win, while he got eliminated from the competition.
