Fredrick Patacchia emerges triumphant in Round 4 of the ASP PRIME Nike Lowers Pro
Hawaii’s Fredrick Patacchia continued his solid form in the fourth round (Round of 48) of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) PRIME Nike Lowers Pro, collecting a convincing victory in the first heat that went down at Lower Trestles in San Clemente,
California, on Wednesday afternoon, May 2.
Patacchia advanced into the fifth round (Round of 24) of the competition following his win in Round 4. Brazil’s Tomas Hermes also made his way through into the next round of the competition after taking second place in his Round 3 heat.
After an action-packed Round 3, the latest ASP PRIME event promised nothing but the most intense action during its Round 4 heats. The fans expected nothing less as the competition field comprised of some of the best surfers from both America and other parts
of the world. The field also included a handful of ASP World Tour contenders, which raised the hype and intensity of the competition to an even greater level.
The opening heat of Round 4, which was technically the second round of the main competition if the wild-card heats were to be ignored, saw an in-form Patacchia take on Hermes, New Zealand’s Billy Stairmand and America’s Tim Reyes.
Keeping in mind that a failure to finish in top-two positions would result in elimination, the four surfers began their battle for the Round 5 spot.
As the four-man bout kicked-off, Patacchia got off to a slow start, not having too much luck with the waves. However, he kept pushing hard, staying alert to grasp an opportunity whenever it would appear. His perseverance eventually got rewarded as a juicy
wave appeared in the late stages of the heat. Tearing through it, the Hawaiian surfer unloaded a series of exquisite tricks to post a 7.43 on the score-board. Keeping the momentum going, he added an additional 5.77 points to his account to get to a heat-total
of 13.20 points. The score served to seal the fate of the four-man bout in his favour.
Hermes advanced through into the next round of the competition as well after finishing with a heat-total of 12.04 points, which included a 5.17 and 6.87-point wave.
Stairmand finished in third place with a two-wave total of 10.63 points, while Reyes rounded out the bottom-position after finishing with a heat-total of 9.67 points. This led to the elimination of both the surfers.
