Fredrik Andersson Hed takes the second position at the UBS Hong Kong Open
Fredrik Andersson Hed missed out on the chance of winning his first European Tour title of the season. He failed to turn in the ball for a birdie on his 72nd hole at the UBS Hong Kong Open, on Sunday, November 18, 2012.
The Swede produced a sparkling six-under par 64 in the final round. However, it was still not good enough to challenge the in-form Miguel Angel Jimenez on top of the leaderboard.
Andersson Hed got off to a brilliant start in the final round, as he carded three back-to-back birdies, starting from the second hole.
He then parred each of the next six holes, prior to adding another run of three straight birdies from the 11th hole. Entering the final hole, he was 14-under for the tournament, and one-stroke behind the clubhouse leader Jimenez.
Therefore, he desperately needed a birdie putt, in order to force the game to enter into the sudden-death playoffs.
However, his attempt for the birdie was unsuccessful, as the ball lipped out and he had to settle for a par putt. As a result, he finished second on the leaderboard.
“I think it was probably the best I've ever played under pressure when you're in this situation and you can win a tournament.  But unfortunately I couldn't get it all the way there, but close,” said Andersson Hed.
“It was a pity I couldn't get one of the putts on the last two holes to put a little bit more pressure on Miguel on the last hole.  He did fantastic, though so all credit to Miguel,” added the Swede.
Marcus Fraser, in the meantime, finished third on the leaderboard, after posting a 12-under par tournament score.
His strong performance at the Hong Kong Golf Club also allowed him to regain the top spot in the Asian Tour Order of Merit.
Talking to the Asian Tour’s official website, the Australian said that he was disappointed with his performances in the last three tournaments that he played before the Hong Kong Open.
He revealed that his coach helped him in tweaking his game to a great extent. As a result, he managed to make a strong comeback in Hong Kong.
“I felt like I played pretty ordinary the last three weeks.  And then my coach came up this week and turned my game around straightaway,” he said.
