Fredrik Carl wins the final stage of the Vuelta a Espana 2012
Fredrik Carl Wilhelm Kessiakoff of Team Astana wins the 11th stage of the Vuelta a Espana after his heroic performance during the 39.4 kilometre race.
He took a total of 52 minutes and 36 seconds and occupied the top podium position with Alberto Contador of Team Saxo Bank-Tinkoff Bank finishing 17 seconds behind at the second position.
Christopher Froome of Team Sky Procycling fell 39 seconds short of the Spaniard and secured the third spot while Alejandro Valverde and Benat Intxausti Elorriaga of Team Movistar securing the fourth and the fifth positions in the respective order.
"It was a very long time to wait and my initial feeling now is one of relief," Fredrik briefed after claiming the top podium spot.
"I knew that I had a good time when I finished, especially when I compared it to Richie Porte, who is a very good time trial rider”.
“I knew then that I would be close to the favourites. I knew that it would be difficult to beat Froome and Contador, but the team know that I've been very focused on this stage”.
“I've been thinking about it with my directeur sportif for a few days. I'm very happy to come away with the win".
Alberto Contador Velasco of Team Saxo Bank-Tinkoff Bank wins the first 13.5 kilometre intermediate time split of the race while Fredrik Carl of Team Astana claimed the 23.5 kilometres second split of the event.
The Swede registered his first season’s victory during the Individual Time Trial stage 7 of the Tour de Suisse and also held the polka dot, King of Mountains jersey for eight Tour de France stages (stage 8 to 10) and stage (12-16).
Joaquim Rodriguez Oliver continues the first overall spot while Alberto Contador has managed to jump up at the second position.
The Spaniard is only a second behind his Rodriguez while Christopher Froome maintains the third position with a margin of 16 seconds.
Alejandro Valverde Belmonte of Team Movistar, Robert Gesink of Team Rabobank, Daniel Moreno Fernandez of Team Katusha and Nicolas Roche of Team AG2R La Mondiale occupies the fourth, fifth, sixth and the seventh positions after the stage 11 classifications.
