Fredrik Jacobson hopes to defend his title at Travelers Championship despite of the thumb injury
Swede Fredrik Jacobson will be back in full form after fully recovering from a thumb injury that pushed him to a late start of the season on either side of the Atlantic.
Winner of the Travelers Championship last year, the 37-year-old Jacobson insists that he is now closing to 100 percent with his injured thumb and has been spending a gruesome eight hours in dexterity exercises for a few months.
He regrets that he had to spend so much time on just a small thumb.
He said, "I think around the Masters is when I really began to feel better. The shots began to come back closer to 100 percent. It took up to four hours per day with rehab, training and exercises for the six to eight weeks afterward. It's almost like I had
no time to do anything else”.
Jacobson landed his first PGA Tour victory last year when he took over Americans Ryan Moore and John Rollins by one stroke.
He particularly took advantage of Moore’s bogey from mere four-feet on the closing hole last year, which helped him secure his first PGA Tour title.
Turning professional in the year 1994, Jacobson clinched his first professional victory at the Omega Hong Kong Open in 2003 and went over to card more victories that season.
The year 2003 turned out to be one of the most prolific seasons for the Swede and decided to join the PGA Tour in 2004.
Jacobson’s best results in a major event also came in the year 2003 when he posted a strong joint fifth in the US Open and a joint sixth at the Open Championship.
Jacobson went into oblivion after his overwhelming success in 2003 and remained winless for a considerable period of time.
He finally broke his winless spree last year on the PGA Tour when he landed the Travelers Championship title amid a sturdy PGA Tour field.
Jacobson insists that he will be returning only to play good golf and is barely concerned with defending his title.
He added, "I've been trying to force the issue a little bit, so I'm trying to be more conscious about pushing to get a big result and just focus on playing and having fun on the course”.
Jacobson posted a strong joint 19th in the Masters this year despite of his injury.
