Fredrik Jacobson keeps Louis Oosthuizen at bay to lead the second round of WGC HSBC Championship
Sweden’s Fredrik Jacobson has now clinched the lead of the WGC HSBC Championship through the halfway mark, pulling in a flawless second round of six-under, 66 to edge past the rest of the field. Jacobson, who performed well on the previous round, was hoping
to capitalize on his early gains with a brand new putter in his bag.
The 37-year-old Swede has won three European Tour events all of them coming in the year 2003. He witnessed a resurgence of his career earlier in the year when he won his first PGA Tour event. He also finished third in Malaysia last week and credits his resurgence
to the cutting-edge Callaway putter he has been using.
“I think I've just been striking the ball really well,” he said. “I've been driving the ball really well over these first two days. I got a new driver from Callaway a couple of weeks ago and started with it last week. They are coming out with a new model
and it just seems to work really well. I've been hitting it a little bit further than before - I think last week there was not much run in the fairways and this course is playing pretty long sometimes.”
Jacobson was barely able to hold on to his lead by one shot under the raging threat of Louis Oosthuizen who devastated the field on the second day with his phenomenal play. Oosthuizen scored a massive nine-under, 63 in his perfect round on the second day
and is now one shot behind the lead. Also the better performers of the day included Adam Scott who posted a 65 and is now tied for the second spot alongside Oosthuizen.
Overnight leader Keegan Bradley dropped to a disappointing fourth after his average round of 70 on the second day. Starting off with a blistering eagle on the second hole, Bradley failed to come up with the expectations of an enthusiastic crowd and dropped
two shots enroute to the clubhouse.
American Bo Van Pelt and Englishman Paul Casey are now tied for the joint fifth after their rounds of 69 and 66 respectively. Another group of four stellar players including world number two Lee Westwood, world number six Martin Kaymer, Asian superstar Thongchai
Jaidee and Australian Aaron Baddeley are now settled for a joint seventh with their aggregate scores of 137. Kaymer, Westwood, and Baddeley scored a 68 on the second day while Jaidee pulled in a 69.
