Fredrik Kessiakoff drops down to 26th position as he suffers from Gastroenteritis – Cycling News
Fredrik Kessiakoff of team Astana finished the 13th stage of the Vuelta a Espana at fourth position at only 9 seconds behind the race leader Bradley Wiggins and was a serious contender for the general classifications as he suffered from gastroenteritis
just before the start of 173.2 kilometre stage 14.
The 31-year-old finished stage 14 at 21st position losing crucial time to his main rivals as Bradley Wiggins finished fifth and Christopher Froome finished sixth increasing their leads over Kessiakoff. After stage 14 general classifications Bradley
Wiggins of Sky Procycling was leading the race with his team-mate Christopher Froome 7 seconds behind at second and Bauke Mollema of Rabobank at third position with 36 seconds behind. Fredrik moved down to sixth spot with 1 minute and 23 seconds behind stage
14 leader Wiggins.
Astana’s doctor Andrea Andreazzoli commented on Fredrik as he said, "He was sick all night, he suffered from gastroenteritis that kept him from sleeping and before he took the departure we feared that he might pay for it on the road today."
The Swedish cyclist mentioned after stage 14 that he was feeling good at the start as he cleared the first climb with ease but started to feel the weakness during the second climb. Towards the finish of the stage he lost the rhythm of the race and never
launched his attack during the last kilometres. Considering that the cyclist was not at the best of his health, he did well to secure himself a top position at the general classifications as he said, “When I see my health’s condition this morning and I see
my result at the finish, I am very pleased, I wasn’t expecting to handle it as well. I still have to recover but this hard day is now behind me, I'm relieved!”
Team Astana started the Vuelta a Espana with Kessiakoff Fredrik, Kiserlovski Robert, Gasparotto Enrico, Kangert Tanel, Evgeny Petrov, Kashechkin Andrey, Mizourov Andrey, Dyachenko Alexsandr and Josep Jufre Pou and the full Astana team is still fighting at
the Vuelta a Espana to make their way to Madrid.
Fredrik finished stage 15 at 141st position and is at 26th position after the stage 15 general classifications with 22 minutes and 33 seconds behind the new leader Juan Jose Cobo as Christopher Froome is at second and Bradley Wiggins
secures the third position after the stage 15 general classifications.
Robert Kiserlovski of team Astana is at 23rd position as the 25-year-old cyclist has moved ahead of Kessiakoff after stage 15 while Team Astana is currently at 8th position with Geox-TMC at first, Leopard Trek at second and Euskaltel-Euskadi
at third position.
