Free Agent Jose Reyes moving around, Philadelphia Phillies not interested – MLB Update
According to latest reports, free agent Jose Reyes of the New York Mets, was seen travelling around in various cities, especially in Philadelphia on Tuesday, November 29, 2011, but in a talk with Philadelphia Phillies general manager, Ruben Amaro Jr., the
Major League Baseball (MLB) franchise has no interests in the veteran shortstop.
Reyes was reported to have been seen in a Philadelphia restaurant on Tuesday, which naturally gave birth to rumours that travelled instantly that the free agent might be in negotiations with the Phillies after hearing about the player not wanting to re-sign
with the Mets for the upcoming 2012 MLB season.
When insisted whether the Phillies were in contact with Reyes or not, GM Amaro finally let his defences down with a rather satisfying answer to the queries.
“I never talk about free agents, but you can quote me on this. If he was in the Continental (restaurant) in Philly, I have no knowledge of it. I don't even know if he was there. But if he was, I have no knowledge of it,” Amaro told ESPN.com.
Not only did GM Amaro play down the knowledge of having anything to do with the free agent at the moment but the other staff including Philadelphia’s front office also expressed no knowledge of any such happening.
What Amaro did accept is that he, along with the management, is interested in re-signing their former All-Star and MVP shortstop, Jimmy Rollins, who at the moment is also a free agent and could be looking forward to exploring the free agent market for a
bigger and longer contract.
Having Rollins in the list of potential add-ons for the next season, it is most likely that the Philadelphia Phillies will be looking forward to re-signing their free agent due to the valuable addition it would have on the club rather than opting for an
outside pick, but Reyes could possible become a choice if Rollins signs on with another team.
The Philadelphia Phillies need to fill up the shortstop position in their team and will be looking to do it before they run out of options as the offseason progresses.
