Free Agent WR Plaxico Burress still hopes of joining Carolina Panthers - NFL News
Free agent and wide receiver, Plaxico Burress, is desperately in search of a new team that would take him after his one year contract with the New York Jets ended this offseason.
He has been heavily touting himself to the Carolina Panthers recently, although sources within the franchise say that the Panthers are not interested.
The wide receiver has found no takers for his services for now and Burress would have to take a pay-cut and sign an incentive heavy contract if he wants to join another National Football League (NFL) franchise.
Burress though remains confident that he still can perform in the league and told
ESPN on Thursday that he is better now than ever.
"I'm a lot stronger than what I was last year, obviously. And I think a lot of people will be surprised at the kind of shape that I'm in. I'm ready to go and compete back at the level that I know I can play at."
He also said that he had talked with Carolina Panthers quarterback, Cam Newton, about life with the Panthers and he would love to play with the 2011 first round draft pick.
In the same interview, Burress showed that he did not like the time he spent playing at the Jets with quarterback, Mark Sanchez.
When asked what he thought of Sanchez, the wide receiver refused to say anything positive about his former quarterback.
Burress was asked whether he thought Sanchez could lead the Jets to the Super Bowl he did not answer the question and said.
"They just paid him, so I think they believe he is."
He was pressed again to answer the question but once again went off course.
"Um, I think the defence will. I think they definitely have a Super Bowl defence."
Slandering your former quarterback will not make his prospects to joining a new team any brighter and team’s will be hesitant to take a punt on the 34-year-old.
The wide receiver has played for both the Pittsburgh Steelers and the New York Giants before being sent to prison for two years in 2008, after he accidently shot himself in the leg at a nightclub.
