Free Agents who can help New York Knicks become legitimate NBA title contenders (Part-1)
The last time New York Knicks managed to make a deep run in the play-offs was back in 2000 when they were knocked down by Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference Finals. Since then, even clinching a post-season berth has become
rather a difficult task for the franchise.
In the last decade, New York Knicks appeared in the play-offs only three times and on all of the occasions, they were thrown out by the Eastern Conference foes in the first round. Even though, with the arrival of Carmelo Anthony
and Amare Stoudemire, Knicks are now expected to become constant play-off contenders. However, making a deep run on the big platform remains the major concern for New York Knicks as even the superstar duo couldn’t do it for the team in the last season.
Seeing New York Knicks’ roster, the team seems pretty competitive and have all the ingredients to become one of the best team in their Conference. However there are two major components which the franchise is lacking, a big man
on the centre position to stimulate the defensive system and a consistent shooter off the bench who can provide a solid support to the team down the stretch.
Recently, Knicks offensive threat Carmelo Anthony claimed that he and Amare Stoudemire will make New York Knicks a winning team in the Eastern Conference. Referring to his gold medal in Olympics and a college championship with
Syracuse, Anthony stated that he has won before and he can lead his NBA team on the top as well.
While talking with the reporters, Carmelo Anthony showed his optimism on becoming the winners with New York Knicks.
"No doubt. We won't have a losing record. I haven't had a losing record in eight years. It's funny; people seem to forget that I have won. I can count on one hand and one finger the guys that have won a college championship, a
gold medal and NBA title. I understand the significance of that but until I actually win a championship I'm not in that group." Anthony said.
There is no doubt that Carmelo Anthony is a brilliant player and his presence makes a big difference for any team. However, considering the strength of the teams like Miami Heat, Chicago Bulls, Boston Celtics, Atlanta Hawks and
Orlando Magic who finished above New York Knicks, the pivotal duo Anthony and Stoudemire needs a substantial support especially from the bench to make a deep run in the play-offs. For that, New York Knicks need to look at the free agents and trade the best
player available on the board.
NBA is going through the lockout at the moment which cancelled the free agency from taking place on 1st of July. The lockout continues to show its ugly consequences as most recently, first two weeks of the regular season
games were cancelled. Whenever the league gets back to business, free agency will come to pass and that is the time when New York Knicks will have a chance to strengthen their line-up to become the winners.
