My brother might have it and I thought maybe I could go through some answers online to see. I know the symptoms so don't give me a site that tells me them I need a test! Thanks everybody!

  1. Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that manifests primarily as a difficulty with written language, particularly with reading and spelling. Dyslexia is the result of a neurological difference but is not an intellectual disability. Most people with dyslexia have average or above-average intelligence.

However, use of the term "Dyslexia" is very vague. The term that is now used is Specific Learning Disability.

Learning involves four stages of information processing:

delay or difficulty in understanding or using spoken language

        * input: the brain takes in and records information relayed by the senses

        * integration: the brain interprets the information

        * memory: the brain stores the information in a way that it can be retrieved later

        * output: the learner reproduces the information through language or motor activity.

People with learning disabilities have trouble with one or more of these steps; they have difficulty taking in, organizing, and/or acting on information their brains receive through the senses. That information can be nonverbal, but more commonly, the difficulty has to do with understanding or using written or spoken language. The problems are based on brain structure and function: a case of poor wiring in one or more areas of the brain.

    # Has difficulty remembering something just read

    # Has difficulty concentrating when reading or writing

    # Is unable to tell important information from unimportant details

    # Spells poorly; misspelling is not phonetic

    # Unusually poor handwriting

    # Has problems taking notes or copying math problems accurately

    # Has difficulty organizing and completing written projects

    # Cannot attend to verbal instruction.

If your brother has any of these, then he may have a specific learning disability that affects more than just reading. Unfortunately there are no free tests for specific learning disability. It has to be done by a skilled psychologist. If he is doing very poorly in school, have your Mom ask the school for testing. Usually they won't test right away, but will try some other academic options first. If these don't work, he will then be refered for testing.

  2. pay for an initial test. qualified teachers cost you about £25. an ed psych maybe a bit more - but worth it.

sheeze you spend more than that on a hair cut or facial - which lasts a few weeks - so save a bit of cash and invest in your brothers education which will last him the rest of his lifetime.
