In order to use Google Mobile maps you will need some sort of data plan. It will work with Wi-Fi but if you are going to be on the road, I assume you won't be permanently connected to a Wi-Fi hotspot. But the program itself is free.

There are some GPS mapping programs that allow you to pre-load the maps so you don't need a data plan. There is a link to them below:
