What's the age of your children?

If they are just getting started, I would suggest using starfall.com

My take on the situation is once you have taught your child to read, your life becomes dramatically easier.  College is an institution that teaches you how to teach yourself.  They don't hold your hand.  Why do we want to guide are children in a different approach?  Why should we not immediately start to expect from them what the world will expect?  The transition from high school to college should be as easy as possible.  

I would seriously invest some time in investigating what laws apply to you that are based on the state that you're in, and become a member of several orgs that fight for your rights. A good place to start would be:

Our motto in our house is that everyday is an opportunity to learn something new.  If children are raised in this environment, the world would be a better place.

I wish you all the luck in the world and remember that sometimes dealing with children 24/7 can lessen your effectiveness and you do need a break.  Have a support system in place that you can rely on.
