  1. equine.com

  2. A couple of times I have found horses offered for free, but they're not riding horses.  They're retired horses that need a good home.  I don't think you'll find any riding horses that are offered for free.  Maybe you could find someone who will lease you the horse for free... but that means you still have to pay board and stuff... so free doesn't really mean free.  Check horse adoption websites for free horses who need a good home.  Like horse rescue websites.  Maybe try petfinder.com.

edit: like I said, I've never seen a ride-able horse that's for sale for free.  You will be able to find a pretty cheap horse for your summer side project.  Look for area horse adoption places... especially a racehorse rehab barn.  Depending on how much those horses are capable of, they will sell for $100-$500.  That's not free, but on the horse prices spectrum, they're dirt cheap even though they will be able to be very talented horses in the future.  Here is the link to one such organization in Ohio: http://www.horseadoption.com/  They have restrictions about how far you can live away from their facilities to adopt a horse, but you should be able to find such a barn near enough to you.  Those places may also have restrictions about re-selling the horses... you'll have to ask them since it will vary depending on organization.  The easiest way to find these organizations is either a Yahoo/Google search (racehorse adoption and your area code or state) or through petfinder.com

  3. No horse is ever free, the upkeep on them in food and hay, farrier and vet, worming etc will add up.  Is there a reason you are looking for a free horse, perhaps if you could explain your motives I could direct you to some sources.

    ****Edit****

My suggestion is to look into the world of ex-race horses.  There are many adoption sites however, if you have any tracks in your area you can sometimes find the buzz around them as to a horse that just needs a good home--and shockingly many are sound, just too slow for the track--they make great project horses and great companions.  Many trainers and owners are in racing just for win so if a horse isn't producing a win they sell them cheap or sometimes for free as long as the horse is going to a good home.  I know most of them care where their horse goes that's why they don't put them in sales if they can find that right person.  I do warn you to get a vet check and x-rays.  I wish you luck in your endeavor!

  4. google horses for free their are a buch of web sites. also try horse fourm .com

  5. i think your only chance of a free horse is one whose health is to the point it will not improve and by law cannot be sold as a killer.....even areas where feed is short are looking forward to a better year this year......i wish you good luck but I wouldn't count on it

  6. Being involved in Harness Racing basically my whole life, my best advice to you would be to adopt a retired Standardbred (Trotter or Pacer). Standardbreds are gentle and easy to work around and willing to do just about anything you ask of them. Most, if not all can be used as riding horses. And some have even competed in shows and can be taught to jump ! Although, the adoption process is not free, ( there is a adoption fee). They have to charge a small fee to enable them to care for retired horses until good homes can be found. Contact the Standardbred Retirement Foundation for further information. You may find a loving friend for life !

  7. Both of my parents are in the construction business and losing there jobs. We have 10 horses. We are losing our house and a place for our horses. We have been trying to give them away. They are all bred to barrel race or for cutting so they are fast. Please contact me if you are interested! I love my horses and I'm losing hope and would hate to take them to auction!
