Free Spyware checker?

Does anyone know a good free Virus checker that i can run to improve the performance of my computer. I currently have Norton 2008, however i have heard some pretty terrible things about it lately and it's possible inability to detect some spyware.

  7. There are some spyware checkers that do a great job for that sort of malware.

    I've had good luck with Adaware. It's good at finding tracking cookies and other spy-based files.

    Also, Spybot is another tool that checks for different things, including and especially spy processesses which may be on your computer, and also monitors if something (such as a website, or CD you insert) is trying to put something on your computer, and asks if you want it. If you expect it, of course say "YES" (like, if you've got a new piece of software on your CD). If it's unexpected or obviously  malicious, say NO, and, know who, what, or where tried to give you some spyware.

    Adaware has come out with its own full-featured virus checker. It's not free, but I'm considering it when my copy of Zonealarm expires. I'm not thrilled with that software.

    This is not the same as a virus checker. You need to keep and run a virus checker... and be sure to keep it up to date.
