At stumps on the first day of the three-day match between Free State and Northerns in the CSA Provincial Three-Day Competition, Free State posted 283 for nine at Chevrolet Park, Bloemfontein.
This was a day for the bowlers as they restricted the batsmen from playing in their comfort zone, consequently halting the batting side from amassing a massive score on the board.
After winning the toss, Northerns chose to field first and grabbed their first wicket at a time when Free State had piled only 39 runs.
First to go was, MN Erlank, who was removed by Arendse after scoring only six runs. With the opener back in the pavilion, it was time for number-three batsman, LN Mosena, to take the field.
The second-wicket partnership steered the side to 67 before the Northerns made another breakthrough on the demise of Mosena, who faltered for only ten runs.
Pienaar then struck gold as he dismissed J http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Graham-Robert-Cowdrey-c60631 Wyk on 46. At the time of this wicket, Free State were sitting on a total of 69 runs.
What had started as a steady day for Free State had now become a fight for survival, as with three wickets down and not a big score on the board, they needed to stop the bowlers in order to prevent an early collapse before the end of the day.
The partnership between RS Second and skipper PJ van Biljon then proved its worth as the two staged a resounding comeback.
The duo outplayed their opposition as they kept the scoreboard ticking in order to prevent the bowlers from gaining momentum.
After taking the side to 155, the phenomenal partnership finally met its demise on the wicket of Second, who found his way off the field after scoring 34 runs.
The skipper was then joined by P Botha as the batsmen kept pushing the bowlers in order to keep the scoreboard ticking without any hindrance.
Nonetheless, the lower-order failed to give a big show as the batsmen kept losing wickets without threatening the bowlers. However, Biljon stayed unbeaten on a phenomenal knock of 131 as the day came to its end.
