Free agency awaits Tennessee Titans cornerback Cortland Finnegan as deal talks inconclusive-NFL News
A number of solutions await the lingering deal problem of Tennessee Titans’ cornerback, Cortland Finnegan, as the talks between the player’s agent and the team management remain inconclusive.
Finnegan is seeking a new contract from Titans and the agent, Terry Watson, has discussed the matter with the team’s general manager, Ruston Webster, and vice president football operations, Vin Marino. A decision, however, is not reached.
Yet again, discussions around the possibility of an extension into Finnegan’s deal have uprooted.
A round of talks also took place regarding the last offseason of the National Football League (NFL).
As a result of the failure of the talks then, the player had left the team’s training camp in 2011 in protest.
He later joined the team, but the issue was not resolved.
Watson confirmed that the negotiations have taken place with the team management again this year. A solution to the issue is in pending, he said.
The player earned more than $3.7 million during the 2011 NFL season and he wanted a revised deal with increase in benefits from the team.
During the past season, Finnegan was reported to have been offered a four-year deal, which he rejected due to the dispute on the value price.
Titans have reportedly offered him $28 million over the period of four years, after his demand of receiving a contract similar to the one that cornerback, Johnathan Joseph, got from the Houston Texans.
Joseph’s deal is worth $48.75 million over the period of five years, and most importantly he will receive the guaranteed amount of $23.5 million.
It is not clear if Titans have shown so much flexibility as to agree to the hefty amount of $48.75 million, or the player is going to compromise on the demand.
He is set to become free agency after the NFL trade deadline of March 13, 2012, which is looming large for the player in the wake of collapse of the latest round of talks.
There is a probability that the Tennessee Titans use the $10.6 million franchise tag before the deadline of March 05, 2012, to retain the player for another year with them.
If he becomes an unrestricted free agent, the player might move to any other franchise of the league, but no side has so far been tipped to be his next destination.
Amid the prevalent stalemate, the player’s chances of becoming free agent are likely. In that case, he will have to wait for another team that meets his demand.
There is no confirmation from either side that they have agreed on continuation of the talks to possibly find a common ground. This will be equally a good news for both sides if they reach around something that is workable for them.
