Free agency looming future for Cincinnati Bengals running back Cedric Benson-NFL News
The free agency market awaits Cincinnati Bengals’ running back, Cedric Benson, with looming trade deadline of March 13, 2012.
Benson said that he has not heard from the team since passing of the 2011 National Football League (NFL) regular season, which makes the possibility of him becoming an unrestricted free agent more true.
The NFL trade market will close on March 13 and all the teams have to workout deals with the players before then or let them go on the free agency on expiry of the deadline.
Cedric Benson admitted that he has not spoken with the team officials on the matter and now was most likely to go free agent.
He said that he was open to comeback in the 2012 season but did not know about his latest status at the team. The mum maintained by Bengals has left the player keep guessing.
The player said:
"I'm not sure. We haven't had any talks about a new deal."
Benson was talking on the SiriusXM NFL Radio show and took the opportunity to also settle his score with Bengals’ offence line on some grievances he has had in the recent past.
He said of it:
"We had a chance to establish an identity, and we kind of got in our rhythm at times and there were times that were tough. You can look at the statistics. We didn't stick on what the offense was built on. When we had Carson (Palmer) and Chad (Ochocinco),
we kept a strong identity in the run game, and we kind of got away from it and didn't let that part of the offense grow and bit the bullet on it a little bit."
The player thinks that the team is apparently planning to prioritise on the running back position in the upcoming draft season, where they stand eligible for 17th round for running back and 21st
round pick for guard positions.
Amid this he sees the free agency as potential destination for him in the near future, where he can make himself available to any of the potential suitors who might be in need for a running back.
Benson has rushed for more than 1000 yards during each of the four seasons he has been with Bengals and the form will surely help the player to market his profile.
No team has, so far, spoken of targeting him despite that the talk around the possibility of him becoming an unrestricted agent has prevailed in the air for quit some time now.
This in no way can lead to a conclusion that the player might not be able to find a potential buyer off the free agency. His performance will certainly help him to attract quite a few.
Yet, Benson also hopes for a faint chance of sticking with Bengals for another and fifth straight season.
