Free agent B.J. Upton likely to sign with new team this week – MLB Update
Sources are speculating in the media that free agent B.J. Upton is most likely to sign with a new team this week.
Earlier it was also speculated that some of the leading teams are showing great interest in his free agency as he and his agent are finalising their potential new franchise.
Los Angeles Angels, along with Detroit Tigers and Arizona Diamondbacks' management have already announced in their indoor meetings that they will probably sign Upton for a long-term contract.
"This is probably the best fit for (Diamondbacks GM Kevin Towers), Castellanos has the potential to be an impact bat who should develop into an average defender at third base, but he is blocked in the big leagues by the AL MVP, which is why the Tigers have tried him in the outfield, where he has less value. Garcia is a good athlete with bat control who should be an asset as a big-league regular down the line,” Jim Bowden wrote regarding Tigers’ attempts for Upton and prospect Nick Castellanos.
He added, "The move would make the Diamondbacks younger, and a high-ceiling player like Castellanos would fit their long-term plans.”
Upton is considered one of the most coveted baseball players in the Major League and every top team wants his presence in their roster.
Recently, when Detroit Tigers' signed outfielder Torii Hunter, many experts believed that the team are now looking to add another experienced player who will give them stability in upfront batting line-up.
B.J. Upton played most of his baseball in Tampa Bay Rays. His latest contract expired after the 2012 Major League Baseball season.
As soon as the season ended, he started to make his moves for another contract. Few in the Rays' management believed that the amount of performance he showed during this latest past season was exceptional.
The Rays' management is also impressed by his performance and as he will likely to sign with them again.
However, later these views were changed and Rays did not even try to re-sign him despite Upton’s personal interest to stay with the team for few more years.
