Free agent Brett Myers has Baltimore Orioles, San Diego Padres and Minnesota Twins interested - MLB
Brett Myers is one of the more experienced free agent pitchers on the market at the moment. He has 11 years experience in the Majors and numerous teams are reported to be interested in signing the veteran pitcher.
Primarily a starting pitcher, Brett split his 2012 season between the Chicago White Sox and the Houston Astros as a relief pitcher, playing 35 games for each of the two. In 70 games in the bullpen, he posted a 3-8 win-loss record and posted 19 saves with
a 4.20 ERA.
Teams said to be taking interest in him include Baltimore Orioles, San Diego Padres and the Minnesota Twins. Some quarters have suggested that the Padres may be an ideal fit for the pitcher as Petco Park, their home field, is considered a pitcher friendly
ball park.
There are also rumours that discussion between the San Diego ball club and Brett’s agent are already underway.
In recent years veteran pitchers have come to the Padres and have regained their form as starting pitchers before inking lucrative deals elsewhere. This could be an ideal chance for the 32-year-old to do the same and get back in the starting rotation rather
than the bullpen.
There have been some speculations though that the right-hander may be asking for too much. Boston Globe has recently quoted an unnamed general manager in the National League who gave his perspective on the issue, sighting that the pitcher who is high on
the wish list of some teams is asking for too much and therefore has not been signed thus far despite his excellent potential.
He believes that the teams are waiting for him to bring down the asking price and then they would be certainly signing him.
“The feeling is he’s been asking for too much money,” said a National League GM. “I think teams are waiting for the price to come down. He can certainly help a team. I think a lot of teams have him on a wish list.”
The 2008 season was the best year in Myers career when he posted a 14-8 winning record for the Houston Astros with a 3.14 ERA, much below his career average. He did quite well on a consistent basis during the early part of his career but later the form was
mixed. He did perform but not as consistently as before in the last few years.
There have been issues with the pitcher off the field with his temper and he has been involved in some domestic violence. This does reduce some of the desirability for some teams as such issues are obviously unwanted for them.
It will be interesting to see which team will eventually be signing Brett Myers. He is an experienced and an able pitcher who can take both starting and relief roles. This is some baggage that he carries as well due to a short temper which may make him a
touch less favourable though.
Ideally he will have to work on those issues and concentrate more on playing ball in the upcoming season.
