Free agent Laurence Maroney charged with misdemeanour drug possession – NFL news
Laurence Maroney, former running back for the Denver Broncos, was charged for possession of marijuana in a misdemeanour charge on Wednesday.
Recently, on-duty police officers smelled marijuana in a vehicle at a traffic signal. When police inspected the vehicle, they found several weapons along with marijuana and then arrested Maroney and several of his companions. On Wednesday, charges were brought
against Maroney and several others by the St. Louis circuit attorney’s office.
Maroney and four other men faced drugs charges although none of them was charged with any sort of weapons violation.
Scott Rosenblum, the attorney representing Maroney in the case, said that his client will plead not guilty in the case. He also told the media that it is “unfortunate” Maroney was charged with any wrong doing at all.
In a radio appearance in St. Louis in January 2011, Maroney said that he should make “better decisions” from now on and that he “thought I’d never be in this position” when saying that he was innocent and did nothing wrong.
“The police have a hard job,” Maroney said. “And I understand everything and the procedures they went through and why they had to do what they had to do, so it's a hard job for them. And, definitely, right now, it's a hard time for me, so right now we're
just trying to deal with this and get it solved as quickly as possible.”
Maroney was picked in the first round of the 2006 National Football League Draft, 21st overall, by the New England Patriots out of the University of Minnesota. He spent five seasons with the Pats but did not have a major impact on the team. He
had a total of 14 starts out of the 45 games that he played in and rushed 582 times for a total of 2,430 yards. From those carries, Maroney’s longest run was for 59 yards resulting in a touchdown out of a total of 21 touchdowns. He also had 40 receptions for
409 yards and one touchdown while fumbling five times and losing all of them.
He was then traded to the Broncos in 2010 and played in only four games with a total of 74 rushing yards before being cut on 3 March. Maroney is currently an unrestricted free agent.
