Free agent Prince Fielder’s status not yet decided – MLB News
The Milwaukee Brewers’ general manager Doug Melvin on Monday, November 14 declined to comment on the free agent Prince Fielder. As his auction is to kick off soon, who will place the bid for one of the most talented and powerful hitters is not yet known.
Having put together a total of 230 homers, Prince Fielder attained this distinction with the Brewers jersey. As to what the Brewers intend to pursue in the days to come, there is hardly any satisfactory answer to this question.
Reports suggest that the general manager Doug Melvin is scheduled to meet Scott Boras this week whereby the two will deliberate over the future of Prince Fielder. Interestingly, there are some big names in the hitters list on free agency, with Albert Pujols
being one of them.
However, the meeting between Boras and Melvin, as the latter stated, is not aimed at resolving this issue only.
"I think some people are waiting until the labor deal goes through, if it goes through," Melvin said. "I think that's one of the keys. The other thing, it's hard to make trades at these meetings because of physicals."
Boras, on the other hand, knows the constraints and allure the market currently has for big players. When names like Albert Pujols and Prince Fielder pop-up, the teams have to do their calculations to go for the best available option.
"I'm sure there's crossover, because in the game there's so many teams that need a middle-of-the-lineup franchise player," Boras said. "I think Prince wants to win."
It is worthwhile to mention that the Brewers have already had the extensions for players like Yovani Gallardo, Rickie Weeks, Ryan Braun and Corey Hart. Those extensions involved large amounts of money. As to what Prince Fielder gets, remains a matter of
wild guessing.
What is known, however, is the fact that the Brewers do not seem intent on investing a very large sum of money on Fielder, a player who has 565 RBIs to his credit with a .285 average, having hit 200 homers.
