Free agent Roy Oswalt still seeks contract – MLB News
Free agent and former Philadelphia Phillies ace starting pitcher Roy Oswalt is still seeking a potential contract from any Major League team after playing ten seasons in Major League Baseball.
He played last season with the Phillies but filed for free agency after realising that his team will not be signing him again for future seasons.
The reports are coming that the most enthusiast team, the Boston Red Sox, are now even denying meeting him as speculations soared that both sides have met to finalise a deal.
Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington said on Wednesday night that, “I wouldn't rule out adding a starter, but it's unlikely at this point.”
Prior to GM’s comments, an inside league source stated that Oswalt "had a great chance” to sign with the Red Sox franchise.
A Red Sox source also said, "I'm not sure anybody but (Oswalt), his family and his agent know what he's going to do."
Boston are not the only team to show interest in Oswalt, but the Texas Rangers were also after his tremendous pitching services.
Rangers’ management including their general manager Jon Daniels met with Oswalt and his agent. Though, no further development was made regarding any new signing with them, as Daniels later stated in the media and told reporters about the issues they discussed.
Daniels said, “If that were to happen, you'd love to have extra depth; the flip side we've got to consider is what if that doesn't happen? How does it all fit together? We've spent a lot of time and resources developing this younger group where they are ready to maybe take that next step and do we owe it to them? Those are things we're walking through right now.”
Oswalt, who is currently searching for a suitable team, has spent almost 10 years in the league. He was 9-10 with a 3.69 ERA in 139 innings (23 starts) with the Philadelphia Phillies last season. While his career’s stats of 3.21 ERA along with 159-93 win-loss record, 1759 and 1.19 WHIP are also an incredible achievement for him.
