  1. Generally 1st Class tickets are about 50% more expensive than  Standard Class, though holders of Standard  'Saver' and 'Open Return' tickets can travel First Class on most Inter City journeys for a supplement varying between £5 and £10

on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. Payment of this supplement also entitles you to some free snacks, tea and coffee except on South West Trains operating from London Waterloo Station.

  2. just go in First anyway, its very seldom checked by the guards. they are too busy reading the newspaper to check it.

  3. Generally, no. But some railway companies provide upgrades to 1st at times of low demand (usually weekends) for around £10 or so. You will have to check each company's website for specific information.

  4. Sorry if this offends... but the majority of whats here is utter rubbish. Weekend first is generally avail Sat, Sun and BH Mon for between £5-£30 dependant on route, operator distance travelled etc. Inter-city TOC's offer STD class singles (booked online) for under £10. THESE CAN NOT BE UPGRADED. Check T&C's when / if you book. And if you haven't learned it yet... nothing is ever free.

And why on earth would the fastest growing rail network in Europe feel the need to give away free1st class tickets?

  5. £10 is not free....................however if you would like to buy a rafle ticket you might win them.lol

  6. You will i did taht and i'm sure it is ok

  7. Not really. The closest you will get is an upgrade, what you will have to do there is find a seat in first class and when the conductor come to see you tell him that you want to up grade. I think that you will have to pay between £15 & £30 for it, but then you get feed & watered for nothing and seat where you can spread out.

  8. As said previously, the majority of intercity train operating companies offer the weekend first upgrade for a minimal fee.

E.g. Virgin West Coast/ Cross Country/ offer it from £10 each way, for a shorter journey, e.g. Lancaster to Birmingham, with the majority of journeys priced at £15. The more expensive £20 is only charged on long distance journeys like Glasgow-Penzance/London/Bournemouth etc.

First Great Western offer it for £10 each way.

East Midland Trains: £6 each way on the train, or £8 return when booked in advance, by 18:00 the evening before travel.

South West Trains: £5 each way.

One of the best value ones on Class 185s- TPE- £6 each way. Simply Bliss, although I rarely travel on the weekend :)

IMPORTANT: WEEKEND FIRST IS USUALLY NOT VALID WITH ADVANCE PURCAHSE STANDARD CLASS SINGLES.

The offer available is usually just tea/coffee/water & biscuits etc from the shop/buffet/trolley.
