Nintendo’s next generation home console, the Nintendo Wii U, gets a Tom Clancy game, albeit not exactly the same as its triple-A cousin, Ghost Recon: Future Soldier.
Ubisoft has been keeping itself rather busy over the past couple of years with setting up and building on the Assassin’s Creed series. So much so that the Ghost Recon series was not given as much attention as it had been earlier on.
The Xbox 360 had Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter for players to drool over in its early days following release and after Advanced Warfighter 2, the series went underground. That was until Ubisoft unveiled their latest offering in the series, Ghost Recon: Future Soldier, during their press conference at E3 last year.
The four-player co-op campaign was impressive as was the action and the visuals were simply stunning. However, that is not the game that Nintendo Wii U will be getting. The news may come as a disappointment to a few but it seems that the publisher is testing the Wii U water before taking the plunge.
Instead of releasing the triple-A rated Future Soldier, Ubisoft is focusing on releasing the free-to-play, Ubisoft Singapore developed, Ghost Recon Online.
The game is a stripped down, class-based online third-person shooter much like Team Fortress, but more realistic and with great emphasis on technology.
Theo Sanders, the series producer, was recently interviewed by CVG and shared plenty of details regarding the first Ghost Recon game on a Nintendo console...ever.
When asked what brought about the idea of Ghost Recon Online, Sanders explained that recent trends saw an abundance of low quality free-to-play titles on offer and Ubisoft, “saw an opportunity there – reasoning that core gamers in Western markets, accustomed to AAA games, would only accept the concept if game quality was not part of the compromise.”
He continued, “Ghost Recon (Online) was a great fit to pursue that strategy, having some of the deepest multiplayer roots in the Ubisoft portfolio.”
Sanders had plenty more to share including specific details of the Wii U version as well as a fair bit of teasing which can be found in the next part of this article.
