Theo Sanders, the producer of the Ghost Recon series got shared as much as he could about the Nintendo Wii U version of Ghost Recon Online, which was not much to be fair.
The Wii U seems to be Nintendo’s entry into the High Definition home console gaming market, after the Nintendo Wii was more of a family oriented party game console with a very limited collection of hardcore games.
Ghost Recon Online is one of many titles that are set to rebrand the image that consumers associate with the ‘Wii’ and show that the console can appeal to the hardcore gaming masses.
Ubisoft, however, seem slightly cautious as they are planning to release Ghost Recon Online, which is a free-to-play title, before releasing anything with a triple-A sticker on it. That is of course, in terms of shooters, as the studio has teased an Assassin’s
Creed game for the console.
After discussing what prompted Ubisoft Singapore into developing a free-to-play game, CVG then asked the producer how the development process would incorporate the unique control features of Nintendo’s next generation console.
Sanders replied by explaining that at the moment they were completely focused on the PC version of the game and would focus their attention on other consoles afterwards.
He said, “Our focus has been entirely on delivering a great launch on PC. Achieving that has been an all-hands-on-deck effort for the team this year. We're looking forward to seeing what we can do on other platforms like Wii-U once we're on solid ground
with the PC launch.”
So once again Ubisoft leaves the gaming population hanging like Ezio Auditore. However, he also commented on whether the phenomenon of top studios developing and releasing free-to-play games would grow or not.
He replied, “As a model, free-to-play is a great new addition to the ecosystem. You still only have a relatively small portion of your audience that elects to pay for items or services. But importantly, you can build a relationship with those who don't pay
too.”
He summed it up when he explained that the medium allows the developers to “engage with those players and make their contributions to the community something valuable in itself.”
