Question:

Freeride mountain bikes: turning a 6 point XC into a 7 or 8 point in the front

so, I like the weight of 6 point freeride mountain bikes...but I don't like how the front tire is close to being under the handle bars. I rode a 7point7 bike that I really like because the front tire is much more forward than on the 6 point, due to the front end is so much higher and my body is shifted back a bit. I ride dirtbikes also so I'm used to a long bike and don't really want a short and tight turning bike. I like the "raked out" feel to cut through root wads when the front tire is more forward of the handlebars. here is my question. can I put like a 7 or 8 point fork on a 6 point XC to raise the front up and increase the rake? The bike I'm thinking of doing this to is an '04 Santa Cruz Heckler that has a 1-1/8" head tube. 1) I don't know much about forks if it would fit, and 2) I also don't know if my idea would work functionally..

  1. Raising the front won't increase the rake...that's determined by the angle of the head tube. As far as forks, as long as the steerer tube is the same diameter and length, you should be able to swap 'em out. Threadless, I'm assuming.
