I don't know what kind of rear hub you had in the past, but yes, you can ride fakie with a cassette.  If you had a freewheel, it works exactly the same, excpet it engages quicker.  If you had a freecoaster, this allowed you to ride fakie without having to pedal backwards.  Now you will just have to laern to pedal backwards as you ride fakie.  Its really not hard.  You can practice by doing 180s in your driveway or on your street (watch for cars) and practice riding fakie and pulling out.  You can also practice at a skatepark by riding straight up a quarterpipe or wedge and riding back down it backwards.  Look for wedges or inclines to practice on while you're street riding.  Once you learn to ride fakie, it will really open up the amount of tricks you can do on almost any obstacle.
