I'm 14 and i just started snow skiing, i have a history of about 7 years in gymnastics. i'd really love to do freestyle skiing, where you go off the jumps and do tricks and flips. my friends tell me i'm too old to try it sometime (once i'm way more experienced, that is). any advice on how to work my way into being prepared for this kind of action, or should i just lay low and listen to my friends?

  1. you are not to old.  first you just have to start to be come a solid skiier before you try to do anything huge.  then you can start to hit the park now i am not a free style ski guru but i would say that if by what you mean by freestyle skiing is like what they do in the olympics where they go off the jump and do crazy tricks like triple back flips and stuff like that you are going to need to make this like your full-time winter sport i know that you have been doing gymnastics since you were seven but when you get on skis it is a totally different story.  but if you really want to be serius about this stuff then go to a big ski resort like a place in the rockies either move there or if you already live there good ask for some trainers that can help yuo out with this and train on.  if you do not mean the totally hard core stuff and only mean like going to a terrain park and popping threes of jumps then hey when can you start. -^^-

  2. you're not nearly too young to start freestyle... i know kids who started late in highschool and are very good now...

Also.... the best skiiers i know took gymnastics for years.  maybe its BS, but they say it helps with balance and being in good control of your body.

the only tips you need are learn the basics of skiing first and start small and work your way up.   dont get in over your head or discouraged, and keep at it

  3. You aren't too old. You are the perfect age.

Get comfortable with skiing at all speeds on different types of terrain.  You need speed to take off of large jumps, and stability to land them.

I was 14 when I first started skiing, and now I am 20 and I have just become an advanced skier, and I cant do freestyle, but I am not flexible at all and I have a bad back.

With a background in gymnastics, all you need to do is get comfortable with speed, turning, controlling your speed, and landing.  You should already have the coordination needed for freestyle skiing.  You just need to get used to landing while moving fast.

Start off with small jumps and bumps at low to medium speeds.  Check out the jumps before jumping them so you where you will land.  after you have mastered them and are comfortable with landing, try them at higher speeds.  When you are comfortable with that, try the larger ones.

Remember to keep your weight forward, because you land going downhill, and as you are in the air, gravity will force your ski tips to point up. You want them to point a little down. If you dont keep your weight forward, you will wipe out.

look up freestyle videos on youtube and check your local listings for when there will be events on tv. watch people in the park when you are skiing and ask them for tips.

And most important: Wear a helmet.

    Have fun!

  4. Tell your friends to go s***w themselves and do whatever you want.  You can do it easily.  Just start small, get used to just plain airing it off of small jumps and work your way up to larger onmes.   Then get used to 360s/540's on smaller then larger jumps.  Then move on to somethign like a corked 360 (turn sideways in the air and do a 360) and then on to like backflips and such.  Just dont go to fast and take your time.
