Freeway directions

Question

I have entered my destination and wish to go via freeway and only get street directions until I am on the freeway beyond the numerous exits it insists I get off on. When asking for a detour it only gives one choice. And invariably insists on surface streets.

I am near several freeways and find it quicker than surface streets.

I live in Southern CA
