Freezer floor has ice and spills out on defrost...

Question

There is a layer of ice on the floor of the freezer section and when the defrost cycle runs it melts and gets all over the kitchen floor. I have defrosted the floor of the freezer only to have it quickly return. There is a small opening in the floor which is frozen. Do I need to open that for drainage?
