SC Freiburg Sporting Director Dirk Dufner has expressed his delight on striker Papiss Demba Cisse’s stay. He admitted that the transfer speculation surrounding the player was irritating but the club is happy that Cisse has taken
the decision to stay, at least for another year.
The Senegalese international’s future was under speculation throughout the summer as the likes of Blackburn http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Rovers-c40385, Fulham and Newcastle United showed interest in signing the player. However, a failure to meet the price meant Newcastle
United would be without a class striker for another six months until the January transfer window.
Dufner played down reports that the club is against the player for showing disrespect to the German side. He claimed that it was eventually the club’s decision to sell or keep the player and the decision was made in the best interest
of both the parties.
“Why should they take against him for it? Obviously it's irritating when something like this overshadows everything else time and again, for months on end. But the lads were delighted with how things worked out. After all, they
know how important he is to us achieving our season goal,” he was quoted as saying in an interview to Bundesliga.de.
The chief also denied recent reports claiming that Cisse’s departure would have meant that the club was in danger of being relegated. He stated that Freiburg has a brilliant team and they are well capable of winning games without
the star striker. Although, he maintained that Cisse is surely an integral part of the side and that he adds a lot of quality to the team.
“No, that's nonsense. We just beat Wolfsburg after all and Papiss didn't score in that one, even though he had a great game. But it can't be denied that with him, our prospects certainly aren't any less bright than without him,”
he concluded.
